KAN-WIN is the only agency in the Midwest that operates a 24-hour hotline in Korean and English. It is equipped to serve immigrant speakers of other languages through a language translator. KAN-WIN’s hotline is usually the first point of contact for victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Trained staff members and dedicated volunteers answer the crisis hotline 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, year round. They respond to over 350 calls a year, listening to women in distress, assisting them in seeking help from abusive situations, and directing them to services and programs.

The hotline assists survivors with:

+ Crisis counseling

+ Crisis intervention

+ Providing information about emergency and short-term shelters

+ Safety assessment

+ Referrals

All hotline calls regarding the further needs of clients will be followed up by staff members.

Throughout their marriage, Christy’s* husband subjected her to severe physical, verbal, and emotional abuse. One day, her husband was arrested when a neighbor witnessed the abuse and called 911. Christy was shocked and scared, having no idea how the criminal legal system works in the U.S. She called KAN-WIN’s hotline to get help. The hotline staff empowered her with information and knowledge to be able to make important decisions throughout the criminal proceeding and exercise her rights and options. Later, Christy confessed that despite all the hardships, through baby steps, she is now determined to have safety in a stable environment, while trying to build her future in her sixties.
